Facilities Planning and Management Officer, University at Buffalo Libraries (Buffalo, NY)

The University at Buffalo Libraries seek a dynamic, customer-focused, results-oriented professional to serve as the Facilities Planning and Management Officer (FPMO), the principal representative for the University Libraries on facilities and space planning matters. In this role you will oversee all facilities-related activities for the University Libraries, including maintenance, emergency plans, safety and security activities, and create working relationships with multiple staff and units at the University at Buffalo (e.g., custodial staff, University Police, etc.). Working in a team environment, you will collaborate with the Vice Provost for University Libraries and other members of the senior leadership team to implement the Libraries’ facilities master plan in order to support the learning, teaching, research, creative, and community outreach activities of UB’s students, faculty, and staff. In addition, you will serve as the point person for coordinating a wide range of space planning and renovation projects. As the FPMO, you will report to the Vice Provost for University Libraries.

The successful candidate will be able to employ a user-centered, participatory-design and/or data-driven approach to creating and improving physical spaces that enable innovative forms of research, teaching, learning, and collaboration to occur in the Libraries. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Three years of facility planning and management experience within a higher education setting, a libraries setting, and/or a museum setting.
  • Experience leading and managing effective teams with the ability to foster strategic innovation, inspire and empower staff, and build trust.
  • Proficiency with standard desktop computing tools.
  • Proven evidence of organizational skills with the ability to develop specific goals, prioritize plans, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to conceptualize the nature of complex problems that arise and determine solutions that are cost-effective, innovative, and meet university or SUNY guidelines and/or policies.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups to build consensus for new and innovative programs and services.
  • Ability to create a working environment where internal and external customer service needs and expectations are met or exceeded.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, listening, and writing skills with the ability to communicate complex issues and perspectives to a wide range of constituencies.
  • Ability to create and cultivate productive relationships and collaborations with the University at Buffalo’s facilities and capital planning communities, and with external partners.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three to five years of facility planning and management experience within a higher education setting, a libraries setting, and/or a museum setting.
  • Broad knowledge of campus and system-wide policies relating to facilities, environment, health and safety and any applicable laws and regulations in these areas.
  • Experience managing a budget for facilities repairs and renovations.
  • Experience analyzing data and preparing reports for senior leadership.

Assistant Director for Technical Services, Cornell University (Ithaca, NY)

The Cornell University Library Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections (RMC) seeks an Assistant Director for Technical Services.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, the Assistant Director for Technical Services leads and manages all of RMC’s technical services functions, including archival description, rare materials cataloging, and digital projects. In cooperation with RMC staff, other library units, and national and international partners, s/he provides strategic planning for RMC’s processing and cataloging systems and services and helps set the direction for the development of new digital initiatives that promote the discoverability of RMC’s collections. As part of RMC’s senior leadership team, the Assistant Director works closely with colleagues to ensure smooth operations across the Division.

Library Operations Manager, Syracuse University Libraries

Operations Manager plays a mission-critical role in the Libraries’ coordination of operational matters with the Office of Human Resources. Working in close collaboration the Senior HR Business Partner, this individual will ensure that the Libraries’ are operating in compliance with HR policies and procedures.

The Operations Manager will work with the Office of Human Resources’ Labor Relations team involving matters relating to hiring and discipline of bargaining unit employees, and the HR Talent team for all recruiting and hiring needs, including the coordination a student employment program that hires over 200 students each year.

In addition, this position works with Library departments to optimize the outcomes and results of our strategic initiatives. The Operations Manager will work with all departments to ensure a seamless orientation system that continues through the first few years of an employee’s career. Considered attention to the need for librarians to meet specific criteria for promotion within ranks will be needed and this position works closely with the Library’s mentoring team to ensure that all have the opportunity to progress.

Congratulations to our 2018 UNYSLA Student Merit Award Winner, William Sheppard!

William Sheppard was presented with the 2018 Upstate New York SLA (UNYSLA) Student Merit Award at the UNYSLA Spring meeting on April 13, 2018. Will is a Reference Assistant at the Catherwood Library at Cornell University. He holds a BA in Politics from Oberlin College, OH and is currently pursuing a Masters in Library Science from San Jose State University. Prior to working at Cornell, he was an Instructional Support Assistant at SUNY Cortland and a Library/Media Technician at Prince George’s Community College, MD.

Will has been active with Upstate New York SLA Chapter since 2015, quickly getting involved and joining the board as Webmaster in 2016, then taking on the role of Treasurer in 2017 with skill. He’s been able to puzzle out the new QuickBooks system and end of year financial reporting doing an excellent job. He is also involved with the San Jose State University Student Chapter.

His colleagues praise him for becoming active in the UNYSLA board as a student.  He handles questions and problems extremely quickly, professionally and in a calm and reassuring manner. He is friendly and easy to work with, always willing to lend a hand and offer his opinion.  As an example of his dedication to UNYSLA, he is still willing to help out our new webmaster Natalie LoRusso with duties as they arise even though he has stepped down from his role as the chapter’s webmaster. We will miss his help and expertise when he moves to North Carolina in June.
