Continuing the theme of data and its strategic use that was started in our November 2013 session on “Big Data”, we will explore how libraries can (and should be) gathering data about their users and then analyzing that data to make decisions and take actions that impact their library or overall institution.

Andrew Sather, Assistant Director of Technology Services at Jenkins Law Library, will discuss their effort to collect usage statistics to help library management to:

  • Justify ongoing membership to customers.
  • Make business decisions and develop ongoing strategy.
  • Prioritize design and functionality requests for their website.

Andrew has worked at Jenkins for more than five years implementing, managing and coordinating programs related to library systems and digital development. He received his MLIS and MSIS degrees from Drexel University where he also was a Teaching Assistant for web and server-side technologies.

Joseph Zucca, Director of Planning and Organizational Analysis at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, will discuss their effort to collect and analyze user data regarding library services at University of Pennsylvania to make decisions that improve the learning environment for students. Business Intelligence tools and techniques are used to transform the role that libraries play in the academic institution.
