Research and Information Literacy Librarian – SUNY Fredonia

Daniel A. Reed Library seeks a creative, collaborative, learner centered faculty librarian (80% Generalist and 20% STEM).  This individual will be responsible for a broad range of activities related to the planning and implementation of library services, including reference, instruction and collection development with a primary focus on the STEM disciplines.

The individual in this position will:
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of Research and Information Literacy Services to provide and market research tools and reference services; provide programming and research support to students, faculty and community users; participate in virtual and face-to-face reference initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Instructor in the development, design, teaching, assessment and evaluation of the Information Literacy Program.
  • Collaborate with the members of the department to envision, develop and execute digital projects and utilize new technologies to facilitate research, instruction and learning.Collaborate with the Coordinator of Collections serving as the library’s subject specialist for the STEM disciplines.
  • Actively participate in faculty governance, institutional service, professional development and scholarly activities.

Assistant Director for Customer Services

The Health Sciences Library at the SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY invites applications for the position of Assistant Director for Customer Services. We seek an innovative and dynamic individual with demonstrated personnel and project management leadership abilities. This position emphasizes a commitment to the HSL team, superior customer service, and to meeting the current and emerging health information needs of the Upstate community.

The successful candidate will be forward thinking, motivated, flexible, and excited to work in a collaborative, rapidly evolving team environment. S/he will exhibit the capacity to thrive in the exciting, ambiguous, future-oriented environment of a regional medical system and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.

This position reports to the HSL Director and serves as a member of the administrative team providing leadership and direction for the HSL. The Assistant Director fosters a creative, team-oriented work environment; leads the departments of access services, reference and Family Resource Center (12 FTE); provides reference services to HSL clients, contributes to evening and weekend coverage; participates in strategic planning and assessment; evaluates existing programs and develops new programs; determines and interprets library policies; and contributes to and learns from the profession through such avenues as local, state and national professional organizations and publications.

Required: ALA accredited Master’s degree in library or information sciences or commensurate degree with relevant experience; 6 or more years of library experience with evidence of personnel and project leadership successes; 3 or more years of experience in a supervisory capacity; reference or liaison services experience; evidence of recent and relevant successful experience in supervising library staff and student workers; experience with orienting and training staff and students and reviewing work; ability to evaluate and assess library programs, services and policies; excellent organizational, time and project management skills; demonstrated evidence of initiative and flexibility, ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively both as a team member and independently and to promote teamwork amongst colleagues; evidence of interpersonal and team building skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.  Preferred: Experience in a health sciences or hospital library; online reference services and AHIP membership.

The HSL’s current interests include developing new collaborations with local, regional and SUNY libraries; further developing our Family Resource Center; developing services for the soon to open Cancer Center; promoting a culture of evidence-based practice, delivering HSL services to geographically dispersed locations and to the patients and families in our 25 counties service area.

SUNY Delhi is seeking an energetic and innovative librarian to join the Resnick Library team. This is a full-time, tenure-track appointment.

Primary responsibilities: providing reference service and instruction in a variety of environments (in person, online and in the classroom), managing] assigned subject areas of the library collection, and participating in the development and marketing of the library’s online resources. Albany Law School seeks a Head of Public Services for its Schaffer Law Library. This position will join five law librarians and a full staff of seventeen in a research library of over 730,000 volume/equivalents that serves an independent, standalone law school in New York’s capital region.

Job Description
Supervises the public services areas and systems – including Circulation, Interlibrary Loan (and ILLIAD), Reserves, Supplementation, and Stack Maintenance. Hires, trains, and supervises library assistant staff in those areas. Collaborates with the director on collection development and selection. Maintains library access policy and other applicable use policies, as necessary. Liaises with local and regional consortia, as appropriate. Processes faculty research requests. Collaborates with Technical Services staff on availability of and access to integrated library systems, as necessary. Participates as a regular member of the Reference team. Participates on the law library management team. The Head of Public Services reports directly to the Director of the Library.

Minimum qualifications
Accredited MLS degree or equivalent. At least 2 years of professional experience supervising staff and students in public services functions, including interlibrary loan, reserves, circulation, supplementation, and stack maintenance. Ability to demonstrate a strong service ethic in an academic library setting. Proven ability to provide Reference service, including staffing service desks and collaborating with the Reference team, as necessary. Proven ability to contribute to a successful team environment using excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills. Proven ability to interface professionally and effectively with all levels of position and responsibility throughout the law library and law school communities.

Preferred qualifications
Accredited Juris Doctor degree strongly preferred. (May consider three to five years of professional legal reference experience in lieu of a J.D. degree.)

Reference Librarian and Coordinator of Instructional Services

Description: The Stevens-German Library at Hartwick College seeks collegial, service-oriented applicants for the position of Reference Librarian and Coordinator of Instructional Services. The position combines responsibilities for assisting students and faculty in conducting research with significant involvement in the college’s efforts to ensure that its students are skilled in the retrieval, assessment, and application of information. The holder of the position will report to the Head of Public Services.

As a reference librarian, duties will include:

  • Providing research assistance to students and faculty at the reference desk (including rotating evening and weekend duty) and by appointment
  • Collaborating in the development, management, and presentation of the library’s online information resources
  • Serving as a liaison to select academic departments
  • Participation in formulating service strategies and policies, including consideration of evolving telecommunications platforms, course management systems, and distance learning programs

As the library’s coordinator of information literacy initiatives, duties will include:

  • Significant involvement in planning, implementing, and assessing a college-wide, interdisciplinary information literacy program
  • Cooperative scheduling of librarians’ provision of instruction sessions to classes
  • Direct provision of instruction sessions to some classes

Required Qualifications: Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association; experience or relevant coursework in reference services; substantial experience using and interpreting a wide range of print and online information resources; ability to articulate contemporary approaches to information literacy, and contribute to discussions critically examining its role in the liberal arts curriculum; excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to work with faculty, students, and colleagues throughout the library with a cooperative spirit; flexibility in addressing issues and exigencies associated with the position’s responsibilities; appreciation of the nature and benefits of liberal arts education.

Preferred qualifications: Experience providing reference service or information literacy instruction in an academic library.
